Boston Red Sox Luxury Suite Tickets - Single Game Rentals - Deadline March 15th

Special Limited Access to a Boston Red Sox Suite until March 15th. Red Sox suites are extremely hard to come by and we have gained limited access until March 15th to select our dates with the owner. Once the date passes by, the suite will not be available for single game rentals. The owner will use the remaining games. This is a one-time deal that we have arranged with the owner. We have had many requests for Boston Red Sox games in the past and suite owners are very reluctant to give up games.

American Idiot: Non-Stop, Idiotic Fun!

Just in time for the holidays, a musical that is about the demise of American society. American Idiot, based upon the Green Day rock opera with the same name, has had a successful run on Broadway, and began a national tour starting in December. One stop will be the Oriental Theatre, as part of the Broadway in Chicago series.

This musical features the music of Green Day and the lyrics of its lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong, direction by Tony Award® winner Michael Mayer, choreography by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett, music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Pulitzer Prize winner Tom Kitt, Tony Award® winning set design by Christine Jones, and Tony Award® winning lighting design by Kevin Adams.

The musical follows the adventures of Johnny (aka "Jesus of Suburbia", played by Van Hughes), Whatsername (Gabrielle McClinton), and St. Jimmy (Joshua Kobak) as they navigate a post-9/11 America and search for a deeper meaning in life. Rife with political commentary on the current state of affairs in the U.S., this musical is full of song and dance that will leave you thinking long after the curtain falls.

When asked about the stage version of his wildly successful album, Green Day lead singer and lyricist Billie Joe Armstrong said, "We've always thought that somehow, there should be some sort of stage version, because that's what we were thinking in our heads. The musical arrangements that Tom Kitt did, you know, it's amazing. And their energy is just inspiring."

Hughes delivers a high-intensity performance that is spot-on. McClinton and Kobak complete the unlikely trio, and very nearly steal the spotlight from Hughes on more than one occasion. Charles Isherwood of The New York Times declared this musical is "thrilling, emotionally charged, and as moving as any Broadway musical I've seen this year!"

McClinton, who plays "Whatsername" in the musical, described the impact she believes the show will have on audiences. "I think it's going to make people dig deep and soul search, which I think we all need." Hughes also weighed in: "I think people will be really blown away at the emotional impact this show has."

The national tour will begin in Utica, New York's Stanley Center for the Arts on December 20 and 21 at 7:30 p.m., after which they will travel to Toronto, Detroit, Boston, Raleigh, Chicago, Minneapolis, State College, St. Louis, Denver, Los Angeles, Tempe, Dallas, Costa Mesa, Seattle, and San Francisco.

A Christmas Story: The Musical!

It's that time of year again…time for visits to Santa, stockings hung by the chimney with care, and warm family gatherings. For Chicagoans, however, there is one more thing to look forward to: in addition to other countless plays being featured in Broadway in Chicago, A Christmas Story: The Musical! is concluding its run this year at the legendary Chicago Theater.

This play chronicles the story of Ralphie Parker, a 9-year-old growing up in post-Depression Hammond, Indiana. For Christmas of 1940, all little Ralphie wants is an official Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot range model BB rifle with a compass on the stock. However, everyone is convinced that he'll shoot his eye out. He eventually receives his Christmas wish only to…shoot himself in the eye.

For lovers of this iconic film, this new musical is surely a Christmas wish come true. Produced by Peter Billingsley, who portrayed young Ralphie in the original movie, this play follows the same storyline and contains many of the same scenes as the film, including a rousing dance number with the "Leg Lamp."

"It follows the same story, and we certainly…there are obviously a lot of fans of the movie, so there's a responsibility to have certain iconic scenes from the film in this. Like, when the flagpole flies out, people start to know what's happening," said Billingsley in a recent interview on Fox Chicago. "When the 'Fragile' crate arrives, you know, people get a sense of what's next. And the Chinese restaurant, and stuff. It follows that—it follows the same story."

With this being a musical, of course, some changes were necessary, but these were minimal. "Obviously, it's a musical," continued Billingsley, "so we're going to do a lot of song and dance. But it lends itself well because the format of the movie, […] there were a lot of fantasy sequences, and as I kinda look back at it now as a film maker, it's kinda out there a little bit, which was fun. So it really fits itself nicely into breaking into song and dance."

Clarke Hallum plays the role of Ralphie, and delivers a high-intensity, energetic performance in which he acts, dances and sings his way into the hearts of the audience. John Bolton plays Ralphie's "Old Man", and practically steals the show with his acting and "Major Award" number; and Anne Allgood is Ralphie's mother, and will bring tears to your eyes.

With all the buzz this year over same-sex marriage, bullied teenagers, and the like, many in the gay community are undoubtedly looking forward to a relaxing holiday spent with family and friends. Luckily, there are many Chicago gay events that Chicagoans and visitors alike can enjoy this year. Here are five events that you simply can't miss:

Holly Follies

This year, the Chicago Gay Men's Chorus presents Holly Follies, their annual holiday extravaganza which offers everything from Aretha Franklin's "Kissing by the Mistletoe" to Sammy Davis, Jr.'s "Christmastime All Over the World", plus many holiday classics. In honor of the various holidays, they will also sing "African Noel", "The Christmas Samba", and two Hanukkah songs. Finally, there will be a rousing sing-along that is sure to get you into the holiday spirit. This weekend (December 10 and 11) is your last chance to see this 150-strong choral group, so order your tickets today and enjoy.

Santa Speedo Run

Begun in Boston in 2000 by five fellas looking to spread a little holiday cheer, this event has since spread to several other cities, including the Windy City. This will be the first year that Chicagoans will participate in this event, and proceeds will go to Vital Bridges, a charity which helps Chicagoans impacted by HIV and AIDS. The Santa Speedo Run will be on Saturday, December 10. As indicated, attire is limited to Speedos for Santa, an elf, or reindeer, or Harry Hanukkah; bags will be supplied at The Sofo Tap (4923 N. Clark) to check all other clothes. Participants are asked to donate a minimum of $20 to participate. Sign-in begins at noon at The Sofo Tap, with a Christmas carol at 1:30 p.m. and the event beginning at 2 p.m.

The Jingle Balls Christmas Crawl

Back by demand, the annual Jingle Balls Christmas Crawl will be on Saturday, December 17 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., and will visit seven bars: Lucky Horseshoe, Scarlet, Roscoe's, F. O'Mahoney's, North End, Cell Block, and D.S. Tequila. At the end, there will be a raffle with prizes from all of the bars and some businesses in the Lakefront area. In the spirit of the holiday, they are asking that everyone attending bring an unwrapped, unused toy for kids ages 5 to 12. These toys will be donated to Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago; this is in lieu of an admission, so please be generous. Additionally, there will be a decorating contest between the participating bars, with the winner receiving prizes and a trophy presented by Santa himself.

FINC Christmas Party 2011

Carter Martin and Robert Alfajora will be hosting FINC Pride's Christmas party this year at Circuit Bight Club on Halsted. The party will be on Saturday, December 17 from 6 to 10 p.m. The Masters of Ceremony will be Carter Martin and Maila Witt. Guests are encouraged to wear their best Retro outfit, although this isn't required. Ticket prices before December 9 are $20; after December 9, tickets will go up to $30. This will include hors d'œvres and two drinks. So come and enjoy yourself!

How the Diva Stole Christmas VI

Amy and Freddie are back for another rollicking, ribald Christmas tradition that is sure to have you rolling with laughter. Amy Armstrong is a charismatic show-stopper with Freddy Allen accompanying on the piano. The One Woman Cello Orchestra

I have been waiting a very long time to write this blog post, approximately since the first day tickets for this show went on sale. Many times when we have high expectations for something we are underwhelmed by the final result. Watching Zoe Keating go up on stage at the Hiro Ballroom and fill the beautifully decorated dancehall-made-concert venue with music, however, I can honestly say that in the 3+ years I have been in New York I have never seen anything so fascinating.

With her cello, a laptop, and foot pedals, Keating creates an orchestra of sound, combining pre-recorded loops of music with the line she plays on stage. Handling the cello as if she is caressing a human being, she masterfully transforms her own music and has it evolve significantly from the original recording. The music I have been listening to on the subway every day, while recognizable, was like a parent of the development on stage. Her application of technology is powerfully effective; not only does she incorporate colors and lights to help express herself, she also uses innovative effects with her music. Whether she echoes herself with her laptop or uses the room's speakers to make the sound move from one part of the room to another, the listener feels entirely absorbed by an orchestra.

Her stage presence is outstanding. When she is explaining the inspiration behind a song, talking about her one-and-a-half year old Alex, or asking the audience for orchestra jokes as she tunes her cello, she demonstrates both humility and a genuine connectivity with the audience. Chicago Broadway: Love, Loss and What I Wore

A series of monologues written by Nora and Delia Ephron. Nora wrote the introduction to Beckerman's book, so she was extremely familiar and close to the work. Once she decided to adapt the story into a play she emailed 100 of her friends asking for their stories. Ephron heavily leaned on the novel for her content but did use some of her friends' perspectives to help shape the play's five female characters. Ephron also used her previously published 2006 bestseller, I Feel Bad About My Neck for inspiration.

In 2008 the play debuted in the Summer series at Guild Hall in East Hampton, NY and then at the DR2 Theatre in early 2009. Months later an ongoing, Off-Broadway production of the show was produced at the Westside Theatre, where it continues to run. The production won the 2010 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience and the 2010 Broadway.com Audience Award for Favorite New Off-Broadway Play. After being produced on five continents and more than eight countries Love, Loss, and What I Wore starts its national tour with Broadway In Chicago this month.

The play itself is not about fashion as an art but more how women interact with what they wear. Unfortunately societal pressures make women feel that they need to look good. Clothing choices play a large roll in conforming to or fighting against that inequity. The show presents five different female characters, one acting as a narrator. Her story starts off with a Brownies dress. The women exchange stage time, finishing out 28 stories by the play's conclusion.

Each character has a different personality and takes on certain items of clothing. There are dramatic moments when the women reveal embarrassment or tragedy and explain exactly why they won't, or can't wear certain things anymore. The show also glitters with moments of triumph, celebrating taking control or laughing at yourself. It addresses the pitfalls associated with spandex bras, miniskirts and wearing prints. The humor creates a sisterhood within the theatre, while the drama genuinely addresses real issues that many women feel but never speak of.

Critically, the show has received all around good reviews. Of the actresses Rosie O'Donnell has received the most acclaim. Her most celebrated piece is titled "I Hate my Purse!" Her performance is praised as one of the pillars of an already strong show. Love, Loss, and What I Wore is moving and fun. It's a relatable piece that many modern women can be move by and she themselves in. Prom dresses, tattoos and Madonna all come together to create this timely conversation on personal style and trying to figure out if you are what you wear.

Oh, What a Night!

Last night I finally went to see the famed Jersey Boys at the August Wilson theater. I was not anticipating enjoying myself as much as I did. It took me awhile to see this musical for three reasons:

1) I do not typically like the popular, mainstream attractions of New York, on the theory that there is enough of the Big Apple off-the-radar which gives a more accurate depiction of the city.
2) I am also of the opinion that while one cannot argue that the Four Seasons changed the history of music for many reasons, at the end of the day their sound can be narrowed down to good harmony and a whiny, high-pitched solo which has been played and replayed for decades.
3) I have more respect for musicals which create their own story and music than one which can rely on a storyline and/or songs which has already been made famous over years (see: why I will never see "American Idiot" or "Legally Blonde," and will strongly hesitate before seeing "the Lion King").

That being said, there are several distinguishing aspects about this play that make it worth seeing. First of all, the theater itself is gorgeous and well kept. Intricate in its design, it is both grandiose and regal yet accommodating enough so that no matter where one sits he/she has a view of the stage adequate enough to feel in the middle of the drama.

The director cleverly utilizes his stage. I loved seeing the actors perform with large screen projections above them of either historically appropriate comic strips or recordings of fans from when the band performed.

I also found the well-known scene when the singers' backs are to the audience quite interesting, as I have never been part of an audience watching the audience from the performer's perspective.

With as many reservations as I had, admittedly I am glad I decided to see the show.

Tip: It is not as family-oriented as I thought. If you are considering bringing your kids, please be mindful that there are a several adult themes as well as language used.

October 12-23 will see the world premiere of Joffrey Ballet's Don Quixote in Chicago. Don Quixotewas written by Miguel de Cervantes in the early 1600's. It was considered the first modern novel and is a classic piece of Western Literature. The work is often considered among the greatest novels ever written. This fantastic story has been brought to the stage by the capable hands of choreographer Yuri Possokhov and will be performed with a full orchestra. Tickets are now available for this unique production that will likely become one of the top Chicago attractions.

This ballet is a classic, performed by top companies across the globe but the world premiere of Possokhov's adaptation will be a moment for dance history. The classic tale of Don Quixote features an aging man, Alonso Quixano, who suffers for literature. Snubbing food and drink, he soon finds himself delusional and slipping into the stories that he constantly studies. Quixano takes to knighthood, dons a suit of armor and sets out on a delusional adventure, renaming himself Don Quixote. The allure and humor of the work comes from the conflict of what Quixote envisions and what actually exists, most notably his legendary joust against windmills the misguided knight believes are giants. In respect to fantasy Possokhov spares nothing. "This is a passionate ballet filled with heat and texture, flash and color, firelight and fantasy," the theatre reports.

Quixote coaxes a companion, Sancho Panza, to join him in adventure the two experience strange encounters that are only magnified by Don Quixote's visions. Quixote enters, often violently, into situations that in no way concern him. His misadventures result in all sorts of danger, and a lot of humor—which Sancho often bears the brunt of. The show features bullfights, windmills and an unlikely hero. It is filled with reach choreography formed from Bolshoi ballet and lively Spanish dance.

The story is fully represented. Quixote's trusty steed will be played by a two-person, life-sized puppet. This graceful and agile work was constructed by Vonortha Puppets specifically for the show. It will stand well above the performers and be made of metal, mesh, clay, wood and fabric. The duo has over 20 years of puppetry experience.

This is Jack Mehler's debut as a set designer at the Joffery. A collaborative effort, Mehler is using the show and the book's original illustrations to inspire his design. The company will be using a combination of traditional set and projected images to transform Quixote's world from what we see to what he perceives. The company makes extra effort to refocus the story onto Don Quixote, something many productions stray from. There are many ballets with tales of lovers, but very few have the power of such a compelling character at the core. The Joffrey wanted to illuminate that.

Whether an audience member is dazzled by a specific character, surrounded by the music or simply enjoys the show as a whole, this literary tale shows audiences that everyone sees the world differently.

With Fashion Week, the U.S. Open, and the decadal anniversary of 9/11, there is certainly plenty going on in the city to keep New Yorkers busy. That being said, if you have a spare moment between challenges, whether on the runway or on the courts, you should definitely check out Voca People at the Westside Theatre.

Think Blue Man Group except White. And rather than produce sound with just about everything except their voices, they use only their voices to produce just about every sound (see: "Scratcher" competing with his big brother "Beat On").

I have seen my share of A Cappella groups. I have seen my share of off-Broadway shows. I have never seen anything with as much creativity and audience participation as this one- be prepared to warm-up, sing, touch your neighbor, have the music playing in your head broadcasted to the audience, and possibly even be serenaded on stage. From history to cinema, love and even death, Voca people pretty much have every topic covered in very clever arrangements. Be sure to bring your energia!

A personal favorite of mine, Rock of Ages, takes place in LA in 1987 telling the story of a boy from Detroit and a "small-town girl" both trying to make it big in LA. They unexpectedly share stories of their hardships and - you guessed it - fall in love. Rock of Ages is a 5-time Tony Award nominated show, which has sparked interest in a big picture movie starring Tom Cruise. Trust me nothing will beat this live performance.

You might recognize a few of the cast members but most famous for his quirkiness is Mitchell Jarvis, outside of broadway he is known as Keith Stone, the Keystone Light guy in commercials. You will love his role as Lonny in Rock of Ages!

Review: Greg Gillis is Girl Talk

What's the last image your brain would conjure up when you hear of a 29-year-old male sitting behind a computer creating mash-ups of pop, hip-hop, country and oldies songs?

I, personally, would never think of teen girls sitting around and jabbering about their boyfriends, celebrity crushes or favorite lip-glosses: Typical girl talk.

Greg Gillis feels the same way, and aptly titled his mash-up musical career Girl Talk to play off of the irony of the songs he combines. Lil Jon mixed with Simon and Garfunkel is about as ironic as it gets.

I discovered Girl Talk through a friend, downloaded his albums for free from his website and soon began blasting his tunes in my headphones at an all time high.

And, though I invest in high quality headphones, I could just imagine how much better he would be live. And I was right.

The Opening Acts

I'm a bit biased against opening acts. I used to go to shows all the time with 4-5 opening bands before the group I came for. I'd wait patiently, applaud, and take in the experience.

Fast-forward about eight years, and I've just about had it with opening bands. I try to stay positive, but sometimes I just can't take it.

There were two opening acts at Girl Talk. The first was a small rap-electronic group called Audio Dax that I went to college with. I didn't know they would be there, so I was surprised when they came out onto stage.

I was feeling pretty optimistic.

Then the next act came on. I really do try to stay positive, and I tried to give this guy the benefit of the doubt, but at the end of the day I'm willing to admit he was the worst opening act I've ever seen. Ever.

He was talentless, obscene, offensive and overtly drunk. I don't even think he was a real musician with a name. Just a guy, a laptop and a microphone. What a buzzkill.

Girl Talk

As terrible as the second opening act was, the moment Gillis started up, I forgot all about the horror of the unnamed fellow before.

He started off with the first track off of his latest album, All Day. The moment the first guitar riff from War Pigs by Black Sabbath mixed with Ludacris, I started looked at my friends, started dancing and didn't stop for the next hour and a half.

What's really amazing is that Gillis doesn't just stand behind his computer, hit a button and play his previously recorded mash-ups. He mixes live. He dances around. He gets the crowd involved. He's also very short.

Not only was Gillis's music beautifully mixed, he paced the songs like a pro to make sure we didn't wear ourselves out before the balloons dropped. Did I mention the balloons?

His presentation is impeccable, fun-- and messy: Toilet paper rolls were attached to leaf blowers and jettisoned across the room. There were confetti launchers. There was confetti inside of giant balloons, which, when popped, erupted into a confetti shower. Someone on his crew even rigged up a balloon drop (followed by hundreds of pops).

He mixed samples from his pre-existing albums and included new songs as well--just to keep things fresh. He played two encores, each complete with even more confetti and toilet paper. His rendition of Shout was remarkable. I nearly danced out of my shoes.

An hour and a half later, Gillis finally left the stage, thanking us all for a great time and wishing us safe travels. There was an after party in the basement of the venue, but I was all danced out.

All of his albums are available to download for free on his website and if you get the chance to see him, grab your dancing shoes, a drink and hit the floor. Without hesitation.

Process of Fusion- Connections EP Review

Combine high-energy rock music and massive, edgy vocals with relevant lyrics and you have metal-rap band, Process of Fusion. Straight out of Staten Island, this unique band is piercing through the sea of average rock music with their new EP, Connections, which consists of five heavy-hitting songs that POD and Linkin Park fans would be proud of.

The first track, Moment of Clarity, will seize your attention with its heavy guitar riffs, driving drums and the melding of strong vocals and rap. Creatively titled Aspire, Inspire, Expire, keeps on with the thick guitars and inspiring lyrics that carry through the album. What Brought Us Here slows the EP down, and delivers a strong message backed with an emphatic beat. The fourth track, Connections, cranks it back up with guitars reminiscent of Anberlin, however we are quickly sucked into the powerful overlapping of the two styles of vocals that is signature for this album. Wrapping up the EP is Lights in the Sky with a slightly mellower feeling, easily pictured in a movie soundtrack, and drawing the listener to wishing there were another five more tracks on the album. When all is said and done, the listener will feel encouraged and energized. If Process of Fusion is this good recorded, a live performance, then, is a must see.

Review of This the Rescue- We Were Ghosts

Once in a great while an album comes out that makes such a profound stamp on what good music should and could be that I find myself in need of writing a review. This the Rescue’s We Were Ghosts is one of those albums. Reminiscent of Seabird and Green River Ordinance, this record fits into every day life like a glove, whether you are busy with day to day activities or distressing from a long afternoon. Each piano-laced song individually portrays the true meaning of inspiration, as much as poetry set to music can be. Listen to the album as a whole and feel an overwhelming sense of comfort, peace and encouragement through lead singer Jake Dougherty’s soothing vocals and the calming instrumentation in each track.

The album starts off with “Home”, an upbeat and catchy tune and the uplifting theme of hope in the midst of being weary. “I Swear You’re Still Alive” has a great beat, lyrics carrying on the message of hope, and while the music is driving, the vocals are slow and smooth. “Hello, November” slows it down a little with beautiful singing guitars and vocals immersed with passion. This is one of my top favorites on the album, as hard as it is to choose.

“Something’s Got To Change” is one of their rockier tunes, with hard drums and driving guitars, all led with piano undertones. The imagery in the lyrics is beautiful, and the chorus is incredibly catchy and is likely to stay in your head. “Catch Your Breath” is a fun song with sing-along potential and a strong message. “When You’re Lost” is offers hope through lyrics such as Something else will come and lift your weary soul and When you’re scared I hope you find Me on your mind.

Most people can relate to “Trouble”; instrumentally it’s beautiful, but the lyrics are what really put the exclamation on the track. Lines such as Steady hands will find you on your knees, Steady hands will lift you to your feet, Just hold until all your troubles find their own way home. The swelling vocals in the chorus really drive it all the way home. Just when you think you have heard the best of this album comes “Low”. This is on the top of my favorite list off this record, with tingly-good music, a powerful message, and the calming vocals. You know you’re such a lovely soul will stay with you all day. It is songs like this make me proud to be a fan.

“Still Dreaming” has a hint of a Delirious sound, particularly with the guitars, and continues to carry hope through the duration of the record. The “oohs” add a great little touch towards the middle and end. “Silhouettes” slows it way down with an impassioned message. Wrapping up the album is “Rise”, a inspiring song that is sure to be a crowd pleaser at shows, complete with acoustic guitars and hand clapping. With a great theme about overcoming struggles, lyrics like Hope you’ve got to rise sum up the album in one powerful, moving line.
